Demon Fuzz

Demon Fuzz was a group of seven young musicians who came together after emigrating to London in the early 1960s. Since 1948, the British government had been encouraging people in the Commonwealth to settle in England, in hopes of replenishing that country’s war-depleted work population; a happy by-product was that before long, many a West Indian riddim could be heard emanating from the clubs and street corners in big cities like Birmingham and London.

Stylistically, Demon Fuzz’s single album, 1970’s Afreaka!, is hard to pin down. But then, I guess that’s the point. Demon Fuzz went out of their way to keep people guessing; at gigs, they’d let people assume they were a reggae band, only to launch into some African-influenced jazz/rock number. Jaws hit the floor and feet started tapping. “We were different, totally different,” says Demon Fuzz trombonist Clarance Crosdale.

Gagosian Gallery, New York (Feb)

Few familiar names to drop by this month include Damien Hirst, Aaron Young, Philip Taafe.

Hirst needs no introduction. The exhibition takes its title from the central sculpture in the exhibition, a severed bull’s head with golden horns and crowned with a solid gold disc. No surprises with the extremity of this artist, who has pushed all boundaries and excluded all barriers within the business of art. An interesting collection but far from his best.

Aaron Young presents a series of life-size glass casts of wrecking balls, crafted in Murano, Venice. This is his first solo exhibition in the Gagosian gallery, and his typical style is of extreme action as a generative force. His character moulds from a rebelled personality excited with dangerous situations and scenes. Earlier works consist of drawings, paintings, moulds, sculptures, and photographs.

Philip Taaffe, however is an artist dedicated exclusively to his graphic work. Abstract painting-like of images in art, nature, architecture, and archaeology, where he explores a wide range of textual colors to describe a process or natural monument.

Here’s a look at our trip to Bread and Butter Berlin: The bustling metropolis of Berlin, the eccentric styles and flavors which seemed to ooze from the chill of a German winter. The energy was amazing! We were glad for all the moments shared with old friends, fellow designers and everyone who had the chance to come along and share this experience whether it was in Berlin or Paris ~ Thank you to all.

We were invited by our friends at Agentur V, to see the Stine Goya show during Berlin Fashion Week. This is a great venue that was buzzing with fashion lovers all supporting a local designer, so great to see.

The World is Flat: Small is the New Big

David rocks Goliath

Competing with the big boys used to be a daunting task. In the global economy it feels like bringing a pen-knife to a gun fight. But when taking on the empire, young skywalker, it’s always best to take on the biggest guy in the galaxy. Just think; little David is still getting hype from knockin’ out Goliath.

Cipherist Manifesto v0.1

On behalf of Hong Kong, the crossroad of the future’s great promise, a true world city, let me express humility, and deepest gratitude, for the privilege of speaking to our global village.
I am a person without great wealth, without agency, or master of any nation, so my voice comes to you as an unlikely messenger of our future together; but the fierce urgency of our time compels me to express the transformation we are amidst.
