Explorations by Karl Gerstner

Yes its Jackson Pollock, the Expressionist painter. A ‘true Pollock’ was a work induced with such harmony and skill that he could create fractal patterns close to those found in nature. Pollock, for me was the most reclusive artist for his fluid and complex thoughts. His work could illustrate a story within the painting, combined with an abstract form of technique and movement. A mathematical representation of order and chaos. His ‘dripping technique’ and unique vision can be influenced from early works made by the Indians and the Mexicans. Pollock shared an experience with each work as he was painting its life. His work is evidence for the natural relationship he shared with each piece. This week, I am happy to share this little tribute to a legacy of the Pollock.

A few little things which sprung to mind this month. Follow here to see some rare celebrity photos which have been dug up from the past. Do you remember this guy ?

Sad tribute to one of the greatest. RIP Malcom McLaren, you will be dearly missed.

Stanley Kubrick was noted for the scrupulous care with which he chose his subjects, his slow method of working, the variety of genres he worked in, his technical perfectionism and his reclusiveness about his films and personal life. I reminded myself of his brilliance by watching his three classics this week, Full Metal Jacket, 2001 Space Odyssey, and A Clock Work Orange. Sheer brilliance !

News from New York-based Graphic Designer, Art Director and Photographer Irwin Tobias Matutina has a small but highly considered body of commercial work as well as some striking images in his personal cache.

On another quick note you should check out the legendary Dutch graphic designer Wim Crouwel here. Its really cool that each piece can be viewed individually and zoomed in to look at a larger scale. It’s the holy grail of graphic design and if you are unfamiliar with Crouwel’s work, spend some quality time picking through it. This is inspiration guaranteed.

And some for the prepstas

I will have to apologize for the lack of posts this past week, my newsfeed has been over loading, and there has been some interesting things cooking around the Cipher team. This is an artist which managed to slip by my fingers. Alexa Meade, has painting techniques which push the boundary of perception by compressing three dimensional subjects into two dimensional planes. You have probably seen her works pop up around the viral buzz of things, but be sure to check her extra ordinary work !

“Alexa Meade’s innovative use of paint on the three dimensional surfaces of found objects, live models, and architectural spaces has been incorporated into a series of installations that create a perceptual shift in how we experience and interpret spatial relationships.”
The Hong Kong music scene has come a long way over the past decade ,with an uprising of inspiring young local talents which hinder this ecletic mixture of traditional and popular music. China has opened its doors to the International music scene which has played a rippling effect into the most globally recognized city of diversity ~Hong Kong.
Hong Kong is a unique kaleidoscope of life; a sophisticated fusion of East and Western culture, which nests on a beautiful lagoon on the coast of China. The people, the language, the contrasts, the variety of different music and trends has become a corner stone which now represents Hong Kong as one of the more dynamic cities in the World.
So, there is no denying that talent lives and breathes in the city, hiding away from the glamour and gloss which can suffocate many when supporting their image as an artist. We have been lucky enough to befriend a band of influential designers who have found inspiration in this greater metropolitan area. GOOD FELLAS have been kind enough to play a contribution on a particular Art Project which we have been cooking up these past two months . . . .So stay informed !
If your on the look out for some of Hong Kong’s finest talent, than look no further. This month we will be having various artists come through the Sheung Wan office to discuss about music and life, so that we can share with you something that we have been waiting for, for soo long ! 10 ARTISTS, 10 STYLES, 10 CHAPTERS is all i can say just now…We will be posting development as this project unfolds and the execution is near to unravel the much anticipated collaboration of the year !
CIPHER presents to you GOOD FELLAS, who will be throwing a T-Shirt Launch/GIG at the start of next month . . . Like I said, if your into music than you should come along and see what the CIPHER team and the GOOD FELLAS may have in common in the following months. Look forward to seeing you there !

David Byrne is a huge inspiration for many artists, responsible for numerous achievements and success stories through out an exhilarating career. David, has been kept busy with new tracks for charity albums and his own solo projects on record, working in a variety of media, including film, photography, opera and internet-based projects. David is also a visual artist, who has shown works in contemporary art galleries and museums as early as the 90’s. If you haven’t checked out his most recent works, collaborating a revival with old friend and musician Brian Eno to then move on to the newer generation to the likes of Santigold. A much anticipated documentary called “Ride, Rise, Roar” will be releasing very soon, and I know I will be sitting on the edge of my seat anxiously waiting, whether it be at a theatre or on my laptop !
