Alice in Wonderland 1903

Are you people excited for the new release of Alice In Wonderland by Tim Burton? I have posted a few articles on our facebook page in regards to Tim’s galleries earlier this year, and this is undoubtedly one of my favourite reads and Walt Disney collections…..but I didn’t realise it has been over 100 years since the first version of Alice In Wonderland was made, back in 1903!

Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960 – 1988): Artist And Cultural Icon

jean1

Jean-Michel Basquiat, the Haitian-American artist who became famous as an painter and then moved on to become one of the forerunners of the neo-expressionist art movement. It was in 1980, when he truly gained recognition laying his works alongside the likes of Andy Warhol and other huge household names. Basquiat could offer a vivacious style which echoed through his personality and art.

In the picture above you can see the intimacy which surfaced between Basquiat and Madonna for a strong period at the breadth of his success. Unfortunately Basquiat was easily influenced, and soon after he developed an excessive heroin habit, living among the junkies and street artists in the New York underground. He had reached international fame, and his mind became fragile, although still producing sell out solo exhibitions. It was a sad tale, with such a short finish but a genuine talent who will be remembered, and whose art will live on.

Fabrique

Last week, we head off to Sham Shui Po with the production team to shop for new materials, and to get an idea of what sorts of fabric and patterns would be nice for the following seasons.

Sham Shui Po is a popular place for fashion designers or interior architects who come out here on a regular basis with their duffle bag and measuring tape.

We make a day of it by walking around sourcing out new shops, and filling up our bag – as the day gets heavier we get a little hungrier. Dai Pai Dong is our stop over for a nice lunch and a recap of where the goods lie.

Mmmm

We get straight back into it though, where we find some inspiration from the beef noodles and back on our shopping spree !

All the Fabric stores were blessed by this Chinese dragon, so we thought of capping off our luck and called it a day !

Carnaby Street: 1960 – 2010 | 50 Years of Music & Fashion

Today I was pleased to fall upon a popular article (for me), which immediately grabbed my attention. A new exhibition opens on Carnaby Street this month, celebrating 50 years of fashion and music on London’s famous street. Carnaby street, has been my favourite little quarters ever since my first steps in the Greater London, while i would wonder around rather aimlessly, drink coffee, chat to a few shop owners and buy the odd T Shirt. Carnaby street has, and forever will, contain some of the first steps of Uk based artists who lived and even entertained on the very tiled streets I (and many others) enjoy a casual stroll. There is a certain vibrance in the air which narrates an story of culture and fashion which transcends through modern trends, even today. If you were to take a look back in time, you would see where the initial swinging London got its name.

So trace the changes that took place transforming Carnaby from a green field with a well and a scarecrow 500 years ago, through the iconic characters associated with Carnaby’s music heritage like The Rolling Stones, Sex Pistols and Jimi Hendrix, to today’s hot designers and labels on the street. Definitely a reason to get up and go wandering this month ! Enjoi

Harvest by Hiroshi

I found this very interesting gallery by Hiroshi, who portrays the life of a skateboard deck using old skateboards and iconic images to enlighten you with his vision. Here is a look at the Harvest: Skate and Destroy Exhibition. Currently on show at plsmis gallery in Tokyo till the 27th. I love the inspiration of destruct, destroy or rebuild. Hiroshi is a genius!

“Skate decks eventually see its life shortened by snapping, cracking and/or wearing out. Purchasing new decks is a never ending cycle and this was evident by the tower of old decks that were reaching to the ceiling of my room. We can’t throw away these decks because they hold sentimental meanings to us. I looked at these unusable decks every day and thought there must be something I can make with these.

I decided to make some accessories with the old decks and this was the birth of Harvest. The works of Harvest are through the perspectives of a skater and as an artist. As a skater, I want to take responsibility of reusing skateboards when they were no longer useable. Also, as an artist I want to explore the possibilities of what can be done with skateboards.

We see the care and effort that a skater can have for his/her deck and we also acknowledge the origins of a skateboard. We believe that if the small things we do can connect to sustainability then we’re doing something right. We’d be satisfied in our effort when people look at products and start thinking of ways to recycle.”

Most of the time, the finer things in life are the more spectacular. Here is a collection of digital manipulated photographs of billboards which Josef took along highways in the USA. Classic American modern art portraying simplicity.

Andrea Myers

“Within my artistic practice, I maintain an interest in exploring the space between the two- dimensional and three- dimensional, hybridizing painting, printmaking and sculpture. I feel my work is dependent upon various processes, such as cutting as drawing, the relationship between deconstruction and construction, and the inherent malleability and vulnerability of my chosen materials, namely fabric and paper. I identify myself as a painter who constructs painterly sculptures and installations. I am interested in using painting as a matrix to work against and to stretch into the realms of other mediums. I look to painting to inspire color and form, and extract the formal qualities to reinvent the boundaries of painting”
